Our large popular youth club serving young people from both Bromley and Lewisham is to close at the end of March.
Funding for the club by both Bromley and Lewisham councils has ended.
The Chair of Bromley and Downham Youth Club’s board of trustees, Phil Cheverton, said: “After 35 years of working with young people I regret that we have had to make the decision to close the club. Personally, and for the young people and their families in the area, I think it will be a great loss. Without continued funding we cannot pay our trained and experienced staff and provide the resources needed to give the young people a safe and enjoyable experience.”
The club, originally known as Downham Boys Club, in Valeswood Road, is run by a charity established ninety years ago to provide support, and activities for young people in the families moving out from central London to the new suburbs and estates. Since that time the club has developed into a community-based service working with young people to improve their personal skills. The charity will continue to support youth work in the area through other groups and agencies.
The building will stay open as a Community Centre with Pre-School and other activities continuing.
